There are many who have gone before us.

Here is a brilliant piece of work by Jungos on the appfrica blog. It is a graphic representation of the number of people who have ever lived against those already dead.
The number of births are across the top, on a timeline, while the large circle in the middle the white area is the number who have lived before, and the red dot are those alive today. According to jungos, it is as accurate as modern science will allow. Below are a series of circles depicting the relative numerical values of particular events, such as war, genocide.

Apart from being a wonderful visualisation, the image itself is a splenid piece of graphic design - regardless of the content, it's a very cool composition.
